Allstate Car Insurance in New York – Is Allstate Good for New Yorkers?

Last Updated on October 4, 2026 by James Shaffer

Allstate is a long-established national insurer that sells auto insurance in New York through local agents, online, and by phone. For New York drivers, the more useful question is not whether Allstate is universally “cheap” or “expensive,” but how its quote, coverage options, discounts, and service compare with other insurers for your specific situation.

Allstate offers the coverages New York requires as well as options such as collision, comprehensive, rental reimbursement, roadside assistance, rideshare coverage, and its Drivewise telematics program. Here’s what to consider before buying an Allstate policy in New York.

At a Glance

  • Available in New York: Allstate sells auto insurance in New York and offers the liability, no-fault, and uninsured-motorist protections required by state law.
  • Rates Are Individual: There is no reliable way to say Allstate is always one of New York’s cheapest insurers. Your premium depends on factors such as your vehicle, location, driving history, coverage choices, mileage, and available discounts.
  • Several Optional Features: Depending on eligibility and policy terms, Allstate offers options including collision, comprehensive, rental reimbursement, roadside assistance, rideshare coverage, and Accident Forgiveness.
  • Drivewise Is Available: New York drivers can participate in Allstate’s smartphone-based Drivewise program. Allstate says driving behavior can affect savings, but high-risk Drivewise behavior does not increase rates in New York.

About Allstate

Allstate traces its history to 1931, when it was founded as part of Sears, Roebuck and Co. Sears sold a portion of Allstate to the public in 1993 and completed the company’s separation in 1995. Today, Allstate insurance companies operate from Northbrook, Illinois, and the company remains a major provider of personal auto insurance in the United States.

Allstate combines a traditional local-agent network with online quoting, digital policy management, a mobile app, and electronic claims tools. New Yorkers can learn more or request a quote through Allstate’s New York auto insurance page.

Allstate Car Insurance Rates in New York

There is no single Allstate rate for New York drivers, and older studies ranking one company as the “cheapest” can quickly become outdated. Insurance premiums are highly individualized, and the company that is inexpensive for one household may be considerably more expensive for another.

Allstate says its New York premiums can be influenced by factors including the vehicle you insure, your driving habits and annual mileage, your ZIP code, your coverage limits and deductibles, and the discounts for which you qualify.

Allstate currently lists several potential New York discounts, including discounts for anti-theft devices, defensive-driving courses, good students, students away at school, and qualifying safe drivers. Eligibility and savings vary, so compare the final quoted premium rather than assuming a particular discount makes one insurer cheaper.

Quick tip: When comparing Allstate with another insurer, use the same liability limits, deductibles, optional coverages, drivers, and vehicles on each quote. A lower premium is not necessarily a better deal if the quote provides less coverage.

New York Car Insurance Requirements

Allstate policies sold in New York must comply with New York’s auto insurance requirements. According to the New York State Department of Financial Services, a registered vehicle must carry liability insurance, no-fault Personal Injury Protection, and uninsured motorist coverage.

Required CoverageNew York Minimum
Bodily injury liability$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident for bodily injury not resulting in death
Property damage liability$10,000 per accident
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)$50,000 in basic no-fault benefits per person
Uninsured motorist coverage$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident for bodily injury occurring in New York

New York’s bodily injury liability requirements are higher when an accident results in death: the required limits are $50,000 for one person’s death and $100,000 for the deaths of two or more people in one accident.

The state’s required uninsured motorist coverage primarily protects against bodily injury caused by uninsured and hit-and-run drivers in New York. Supplementary Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (SUM) coverage can provide broader protection and higher limits. When a New York policy is first issued, SUM coverage is generally offered at limits equal to the policy’s bodily injury liability limits unless the policyholder selects a lower amount or declines it as permitted by New York law.

Allstate Collision and Comprehensive Coverage

New York law does not require collision coverage or comprehensive coverage, although a lender or leasing company may require both if you finance or lease your vehicle.

Collision coverage helps pay to repair or replace your insured vehicle, subject to the policy’s deductible and limits, when it is damaged in a covered collision with another vehicle or object. Comprehensive coverage generally applies to covered losses that are not collisions, such as theft, vandalism, falling objects, severe weather, animal-related damage, and certain types of vehicle fire damage.

Whether these coverages make financial sense depends partly on the vehicle’s value, the deductible you can afford, whether the vehicle is financed, and how much financial risk you are comfortable retaining yourself.

Additional Allstate Coverage Options

Beyond the basic policy, Allstate offers several additional auto insurance coverage options. Availability, limits, eligibility, and pricing can vary, so check the actual New York quote and policy documents before relying on a particular feature.

Rental Reimbursement

Rental reimbursement is optional coverage that can help pay for a rental vehicle or other eligible transportation while your vehicle is being repaired after a covered loss. Daily and total reimbursement limits apply. It generally does not pay for a rental simply because your vehicle needs routine maintenance or suffers an uncovered mechanical breakdown.

Roadside Assistance

Allstate offers roadside assistance through auto-policy coverage and separate roadside programs. Depending on the plan, services can include towing, jump-starts, help with flat tires, and lockout assistance. Limits and service-call rules depend on the option you purchase.

Rideshare Coverage

Allstate’s New York auto insurance page also lists insurance for rideshare drivers. This is important because a standard personal auto policy may not cover all periods when a driver is logged into an Uber, Lyft, or another transportation-network-company app. Allstate’s Ride for Hire coverage is designed to help address certain gaps between a personal policy and coverage supplied by the rideshare company.

Accident Forgiveness

Allstate advertises optional Accident Forgiveness, which is designed to prevent an eligible accident from increasing the policyholder’s rate solely because of that accident. It is not the same as having an accident removed from your driving or claims history, and availability and policy terms can vary. Before paying extra for it, consider whether accident forgiveness is worth buying for your situation.

New Car Protection

Allstate also discusses protection options for newer vehicles, including new-car replacement and related coverages. These features are not automatically included with every policy, and availability can depend on the vehicle and policy. If you recently purchased a vehicle, ask specifically whether new car replacement coverage is available and review its eligibility requirements and exclusions.

How Allstate Drivewise Works in New York

Drivewise is Allstate’s optional telematics program. It operates through the Allstate mobile app and uses driving data to provide a more personalized rate and safe-driving feedback.

Allstate says the program considers driving behavior and can provide savings for qualifying drivers. Importantly for New Yorkers, Allstate’s current Drivewise information says drivers in some states can see their rates increase because of higher-risk driving behavior, but New York is an exception to that rate-increase provision.

Participation requires allowing the app to collect driving-related information, including location and motion data. If you are considering Drivewise, review its current privacy terms and how your driving data will be collected and used before enrolling.

Drivers with a good driving record may also want to compare Drivewise savings with Allstate’s other available safe-driver discounts. Do not assume that a telematics program will produce the same savings for every driver.

Allstate’s Complaint Record in New York

New York’s Department of Financial Services ranks auto insurers every year by upheld complaints per $1 million of premiums. A complaint is upheld when DFS agrees the insurer handled something wrong, such as a late no-fault payment or an improper nonrenewal. The 2025 report covers complaints closed in 2024 and ranks 128 companies. Across all of them combined, the ratio was 0.0341.

CompanyRank (of 128)Upheld ComplaintsComplaint Ratio
Allstate Indemnity Company400.0000
Allstate Fire and Casualty Insurance Company63370.0228
Allstate Property and Casualty Insurance Company6940.0286
Allstate Insurance Company84240.0504

Taken together, the four Allstate companies had 65 upheld complaints on about $2.3 billion of yearly New York auto premiums, a combined ratio of 0.0285. That’s better than the 0.0341 figure for the whole market. In the previous report (complaints closed in 2023), the same companies had 87 upheld complaints and a ratio of 0.0412, against 0.0275 for all insurers that year.

Those premiums add up to 12.4% of the private passenger auto premiums counted in the DFS report. That share is our own calculation from the DFS figures, not an official market share number, but it gives a rough sense of how much of the New York market Allstate insures.

DFS points out that the ranking counts only complaints filed with the department, and that one or two extra upheld complaints can move a smaller insurer a long way. Use it alongside price, coverage and claims service, and match it to the company named on your quote or declarations page.

Allstate Customer Service and Policy Management

Allstate gives customers several ways to manage an auto policy. In addition to working with a local agent, customers can use My Account and the Allstate mobile app to access policy documents, obtain insurance ID cards, make payments, review policy information, and perform other account-management tasks.

New York permits electronic proof of auto insurance in situations where proof may be displayed on a mobile device, and Allstate says customers can access their digital insurance card through its app.

Filing an Auto Claim With Allstate

Allstate allows customers to start and track claims digitally. Its current claims process generally involves reporting what happened, documenting the damage, arranging an inspection when necessary, completing covered repairs, and receiving payment to the appropriate party.

You can start or track a claim through Allstate’s claims system. After an accident, it can also help to document the vehicles, license plates, scene, and damage when it is safe to do so. Our guide to filing an auto insurance claim after an accident explains the general process in more detail.

Claim payment depends on the facts of the loss, the applicable coverage, deductibles, limits, exclusions, and policy language. The ability to submit a claim online should not be confused with a guarantee that a particular loss will be covered.

Allstate’s Financial Strength

Financial-strength ratings are one way to evaluate an insurer’s ability to meet its insurance obligations, although they do not measure price or customer satisfaction. On September 2, 2026, AM Best affirmed an A+ (Superior) Financial Strength Rating for the members of Allstate Insurance Group.

That rating indicates AM Best’s assessment of the group’s financial strength and ability to meet ongoing insurance obligations. It should be considered alongside the policy’s price, coverage, service, and other factors rather than treated as a guarantee about an individual claim.

Is Allstate a Good Fit for New York Drivers?

Allstate is worth comparing if you want a large insurer with local agents, digital policy tools, telematics, and a broad range of optional auto coverages. However, there is no insurer that is automatically the best or cheapest choice for every New York driver.

The most useful comparison is a side-by-side quote using identical coverage limits and deductibles. Look beyond the total premium and compare liability limits, PIP and SUM options, physical-damage deductibles, rental coverage, roadside assistance, applicable discounts, and any optional features you actually intend to use.
