New York Car Insurance by City
New York’s car insurance requirements are the same in every city and county. What changes with where you live is almost everything else: how insurers price your area, which risks your car is most likely to face, where your DMV office is, and which agents are nearby.
These guides cover 52 cities, towns and New York City boroughs, grouped by region. Find yours below.
At a Glance
- Same rules everywhere: Every New York policy needs $25,000/$50,000 bodily injury, $50,000/$100,000 death, $10,000 property damage, $50,000 no-fault and $25,000/$50,000 uninsured motorist coverage from an insurer licensed in New York.
- Price depends on place: Insurers divide the state into rating territories based on claim costs, so the same driver and car can be priced differently from one area to the next.
- Local risks shape the choices: Coastal flooding, deer, lake-effect snow, car theft and trips into neighboring states can change whether comprehensive or SUM coverage is worth adding.
- Agents checked in September 2026: Each guide lists local agencies we checked against their own websites or insurers’ agent directories. We haven’t rated them.

How These Guides Are Put Together
Each guide was rewritten in September 2026. Coverage rules come from the DMV and the Department of Financial Services, and local facts such as flood history, theft counts and deer crashes come from government sources named on each page.
The guides don’t quote average premiums. Published averages mostly come from quote sites and say little about what any one driver will pay, so each guide explains how pricing works instead. For the statewide rules in one place, see our guide to New York car insurance laws and requirements.
