Is Mercury Auto Insurance Good for New York Drivers?

Last Updated on October 4, 2026 by James Shaffer

New York drivers have a wide range of car insurance companies to choose from, and Mercury Insurance remains one of the insurers selling auto coverage in the state. Mercury offers the core coverage required under New York law along with optional collision, comprehensive, roadside assistance, rental reimbursement, and other features.

Mercury may be worth including when you compare quotes, but price should not be the only consideration. Available discounts and optional coverage can vary by state, and some Mercury products advertised elsewhere — including RealDrive and Mercury’s rideshare endorsement — are not currently offered to New York drivers.

About Mercury Insurance

Mercury Insurance was founded by George Joseph, and the company sold its first policy in 1962. Mercury began as a California auto insurer and later expanded into other states. According to Mercury’s company history, it entered the New York market in 2001.

Today, Mercury General Corporation and its subsidiaries sell personal auto, homeowners, renters, and other insurance products through a network of independent agents. Mercury currently operates personal auto insurance businesses in New York and several other states.

Mercury Insurance Coverage Options

Mercury offers the standard types of car insurance needed to build a New York auto policy, along with several optional coverage choices.

New York requires drivers to carry liability insurance, basic no-fault Personal Injury Protection, and uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage. According to the New York State Department of Financial Services, the state’s minimum liability limits are $25,000 for bodily injury to one person, $50,000 for bodily injury to two or more people, and $10,000 for property damage per accident. Basic no-fault coverage provides up to $50,000 per person.

Mercury also offers optional collision coverage and comprehensive coverage. These coverages can help pay for damage to your own vehicle, subject to your policy terms and deductible. They are not part of New York’s basic statutory minimum requirements, although lenders and leasing companies commonly require physical damage coverage on financed or leased vehicles.

New York also requires basic uninsured motorist coverage for bodily injuries caused by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver in New York. Drivers can also consider Supplementary Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists coverage for broader protection.

Roadside Assistance

Mercury currently offers roadside assistance as an optional coverage in New York. Depending on the situation and policy terms, roadside service can include assistance with towing, fuel delivery, flat tires, battery problems, and vehicle lockouts.

Rental Car Reimbursement

Mercury also offers a Rental Car Benefit for eligible policies. Mercury’s current general program information says drivers who have collision or comprehensive coverage can select rental reimbursement limits that help pay for a temporary vehicle while their insured vehicle is being repaired following a covered loss. Exact options can vary by policy and state. Learn more about rental car insurance and reimbursement coverage.

Does Mercury Offer Rideshare Insurance in New York?

No. Mercury currently states that its rideshare insurance endorsement is not available in New York or New Jersey. Mercury offers the product in several other states, but New York drivers should not assume it can be added to a Mercury personal auto policy.

This distinction is important because using a personal vehicle to drive for Uber, Lyft, or another transportation network company can change how personal auto coverage applies. New York also has specific insurance requirements for transportation network company activity. Drivers can learn more in our guide to insurance requirements for rideshare drivers in New York.

Mercury’s current rideshare insurance information specifically lists New York among the states where the Mercury endorsement is unavailable.

Is Mercury RealDrive Available in New York?

The older version of this article stated that Mercury’s RealDrive low-mileage program was available in New York. That is no longer supported by Mercury’s current program information.

Mercury currently describes RealDrive as a program for California drivers. It uses annual odometer readings to determine mileage-based savings. Mercury does not currently list RealDrive among the discounts on its New York auto insurance pages, so New York drivers should not count on this program when comparing policies.

Quick tip: Mercury offers different programs and discounts from state to state. When comparing a New York quote, use the discounts actually shown on your quote rather than assuming every feature on Mercury’s national website is available in New York.

Mercury Insurance Discounts in New York

Mercury offers several discounts to New York drivers, although eligibility requirements apply and the savings available to one driver may differ from another. Mercury’s current New York materials advertise discounts that may include:

  • Automatic payment discounts
  • Pay-in-full discounts
  • Continuous insurance discounts
  • Defensive driving discounts
  • E-signature discounts
  • Good student discounts
  • Multi-car discounts
  • Multi-policy discounts

For example, insuring multiple cars on the same policy may qualify you for a multi-car discount. Drivers may also save by paying their auto insurance premium in full or bundling auto insurance with another Mercury policy.

Eligible students may qualify for a good student discount. Anti-theft equipment may also affect insurance pricing or available discounts, depending on the vehicle and policy. Learn more about whether anti-theft devices can lower auto insurance costs.

Mercury’s broader discount materials also reference occupation and education-related discounts in some markets. However, discounts vary by state, so New York teachers should not assume that a specific educator auto insurance discount will automatically apply. Ask a Mercury agent which occupation- or association-based discounts are currently approved and available in New York.

How Much Does Mercury Car Insurance Cost in New York?

There is no single Mercury rate that accurately represents what New York drivers will pay. Auto insurance prices depend on the driver, vehicle, location, selected limits and deductibles, discounts, annual mileage, and other rating factors permitted under New York law.

Your driving record can affect your car insurance rate, and younger drivers can often pay substantially more than experienced drivers because insurers consider their loss experience differently.

Mercury markets itself as an insurer focused on competitive pricing, but broad statements that it is always one of the cheapest insurers — or particularly cheap for a specific age group — should be treated cautiously. The only reliable way to know how Mercury compares for your household is to obtain comparable quotes using the same coverage limits and deductibles. You can also compare Mercury with other companies commonly considered among the cheapest auto insurance options in New York.

This is particularly important for young drivers, who often face higher insurance rates. An insurer that is inexpensive for one family may be considerably more expensive for another.

Mercury Insurance Financial Strength

Financial strength is one factor to consider when evaluating an insurer because it reflects the company’s ability to meet its insurance obligations. Learn more about why insurance company financial stability matters.

Mercury General reported in its 2025 annual report that its insurance subsidiaries carry an A (Excellent) financial strength rating from AM Best with a stable outlook. Mercury also continued to reference its A rating in company materials published in 2026.

An AM Best rating measures financial strength rather than customer satisfaction, claims speed, or whether an insurer offers a competitive price for a particular driver.

Mercury Insurance Customer Service and Claims

Some information in older Mercury reviews is now outdated. In particular, Mercury does offer online claim filing today. Customers can file an auto or property claim through Mercury’s digital claims system 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Mercury also maintains a 24/7 claims phone line.

Mercury’s mobile app allows customers to access digital insurance ID cards, make payments, view policy information, call roadside assistance, and perform other policy-management tasks. The company’s online customer portal provides additional account-management features.

New York’s Department of Financial Services ranks auto insurers every year by upheld complaints per $1 million of premiums. A complaint is upheld when DFS agrees the insurer handled something wrong, such as a late no-fault payment or an improper nonrenewal. The 2025 report covers complaints closed in 2024 and ranks 128 companies. Across all of them combined, the ratio was 0.0341.

CompanyRank (of 128)Upheld ComplaintsComplaint Ratio
Mercury Casualty Company900.0000

Mercury Casualty Company had no upheld complaints on about $22 million of yearly New York auto premiums, a ratio of 0.0000. That’s better than the 0.0341 figure for the whole market. In the previous report (complaints closed in 2023), the same company also had no upheld complaints, against 0.0275 for all insurers that year.

Those premiums add up to 0.12% of the private passenger auto premiums counted in the DFS report. That share is our own calculation from the DFS figures, not an official market share number, but it gives a rough sense of how much of the New York market Mercury insures.

DFS points out that the ranking counts only complaints filed with the department, and that one or two extra upheld complaints can move a smaller insurer a long way. Use it alongside price, coverage and claims service, and match it to the company named on your quote or declarations page.

Getting a Mercury Quote and Buying a Policy

Mercury allows New York shoppers to begin an auto insurance quote online. The company also distributes coverage through independent agents, who can help explain available coverage and discounts.

The old claim that Mercury provides very few online services is no longer accurate. Mercury now provides online quoting, a customer portal, digital claims reporting, electronic policy documents, online payments, and a mobile app. Depending on your quote and location, an agent may still be involved in completing or servicing the policy.

Potential Advantages of Mercury Insurance

  • Mercury still writes New York auto insurance: New York drivers can obtain Mercury quotes and work with local independent agents.
  • Useful optional coverage: Roadside assistance, rental reimbursement, collision, and comprehensive coverage allow drivers to build a policy beyond the legal minimum.
  • Multiple discounts: Mercury advertises several New York-specific opportunities for savings, including multi-policy, multi-car, good student, continuous insurance, and payment-related discounts.
  • 24/7 claim reporting: Claims can now be initiated digitally or by phone at any time.
  • Strong financial rating: Mercury’s insurance subsidiaries carry an A (Excellent) AM Best rating.

Potential Disadvantages of Mercury Insurance

  • RealDrive is not currently a New York option: Mercury presently advertises the mileage-based RealDrive program for California drivers.
  • No Mercury rideshare endorsement in New York: Drivers working for Uber, Lyft, or similar companies need to consider other ways to satisfy their rideshare insurance needs.
  • Availability varies by state: Some Mercury discounts and optional coverages advertised nationally may not be offered on a New York policy.
  • Agent involvement may be important: Drivers who strongly prefer a completely self-service insurance experience may want to compare Mercury’s process with direct-to-consumer insurers.

Quick tip: When comparing Mercury with another insurer, request the same liability limits, deductibles, collision and comprehensive coverage, rental reimbursement, and other options on both quotes. A lower premium is not necessarily a better value if the policy also provides less coverage.

Is Mercury Insurance a Good Fit for New York Drivers?

Mercury remains a legitimate option for New York drivers who want to compare auto insurance through an insurer with independent-agent support, several common discounts, optional roadside and rental coverage, and an A financial strength rating from AM Best.

However, Mercury is not automatically the least expensive or best fit for every driver. RealDrive is not currently marketed in New York, Mercury’s rideshare endorsement is unavailable in the state, and the discounts shown on a particular New York quote may differ from those advertised in other markets.

Compare Mercury with several insurers using equivalent coverage before making a decision. Pay attention to liability limits, deductibles, optional coverage, discounts, the insurer underwriting the policy, and the final premium rather than choosing primarily by brand name or advertised savings.
