Harrison Auto Insurance
Last Updated on September 30, 2026 by James Shaffer
Any car registered in Harrison, including Purchase and West Harrison, has to carry a New York policy from a state-licensed insurer. At a minimum, it must pay up to $25,000 for one injured person and $50,000 for everyone hurt in a crash you cause ($50,000 and $100,000 if people die), $10,000 toward property you damage, $50,000 of no-fault benefits for each person, and $25,000/$50,000 if an uninsured driver injures you.
What you add on top depends on where you drive and park. Greenwich, Connecticut, is just past Rye Brook, and the uninsured motorist coverage in every New York policy doesn’t apply there. Students at Purchase College who bring a car from another state face a registration question. And the county’s hazard plan records storms in 2020 and 2021 that left Harrison roads flooded or blocked. The sections below take each of those in turn, then cover pricing, local agencies checked in September 2026, and the nearest DMV office.
At a Glance
- Required Limits: $25K/$50K injury liability, $50K/$100K death liability, $10K property damage liability, $50K no-fault, and $25K/$50K uninsured motorist coverage, from an insurer licensed in New York.
- Crossing into Connecticut: The required uninsured motorist coverage stops at the New York line. Optional SUM coverage applies to out-of-state accidents and to drivers who carry too little insurance.
- Students with Out-of-State Plates: The DMV says a nonresident’s home-state registration is valid in New York. Someone who becomes a New York resident has 30 days to register the car here, and that registration needs New York insurance. Our guide to moving to New York with a car lists the steps.
- Flooded Streets: The county plan says Hurricane Henri and the remnants of Ida in 2021 caused major flooding in Harrison that made some roads impassable. Flood damage to your own car is typically a comprehensive claim.
Minimum Coverage for a Harrison Registration
| Coverage | State Minimum |
|---|---|
| Injury liability | $25,000 each person / $50,000 each accident |
| Liability for deaths | $50,000 each person / $100,000 each accident |
| Damage to others’ property | $10,000 each accident |
| Personal injury protection (no-fault) | $50,000 each person |
| Uninsured motorist | $25,000 each person / $50,000 each accident |
The DMV lists these limits on its insurance requirements page. A car that sits in the garage all winter still needs coverage while its registration is active, and the DMV doesn’t accept out-of-state insurance on a New York registration. More statewide rules are in our guide to New York car insurance requirements.
Liability pays others when you’re at fault. No-fault is paid by your own insurer after a crash regardless of fault, covering necessary medical costs, part of lost earnings, and some other expenses up to $50,000 per person. Basic uninsured motorist coverage handles your injuries if the driver at fault had no insurance. None of the three repairs your own car.
Driving East into Connecticut
Rye Brook and Port Chester are Harrison’s neighbors to the east, according to the Harrison section of the county hazard mitigation plan, and the county’s Rye Brook section places Greenwich, Connecticut, on Rye Brook’s northeast side. An older municipal profile on the town’s website describes easy access from Harrison to I-95, I-684, the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287), and the Hutchinson River Parkway. The Connecticut line is a short drive from Harrison.
What SUM Adds to Basic Uninsured Motorist Coverage
The uninsured motorist coverage that comes with every New York policy covers accidents in New York only, and at $25,000 per person it doesn’t go far after a serious injury. An optional add-on, supplementary uninsured/underinsured motorist (SUM) coverage, addresses both problems. According to the DFS page on optional coverages, SUM applies to accidents outside New York, which basic uninsured motorist coverage doesn’t, and it also responds when the at-fault driver is insured but not enough to cover your injuries.
DFS describes SUM limits of up to $250,000 per person and $500,000 per accident, bought for an additional premium. SUM is capped at whatever bodily injury liability you carry, so a driver with $25,000/$50,000 in liability can’t buy SUM above $25,000/$50,000. DFS also notes that a SUM payment is offset by any amount collected from the at-fault driver’s liability policy.
Two other add-ons deal with your own injuries rather than the other driver’s insurance. Additional PIP lifts no-fault coverage as high as $100,000 or beyond. OBEL, short for Optional Basic Economic Loss, is a $25,000 layer that kicks in once the basic $50,000 runs out; the injured person chooses whether it goes toward lost wages, rehabilitation, or all basic economic loss.
Purchase College Students and Out-of-State Cars
Purchase, the hamlet in the northwest part of the town, is home to Purchase College at 735 Anderson Hill Road. A student who brings a car from home may have plates and a policy from another state, and the rules turn on residency.
The DMV’s page on registering an out-of-state vehicle says that if you aren’t a New York resident, the registration from your home state is valid here. Once you become a resident, you must register the car in New York within 30 days, and a New York registration needs a policy from a New York–licensed insurer. The page doesn’t say how residency applies to college students in particular, so a student who isn’t sure whether they count as a resident should check with the DMV.
If you keep a home-state policy, tell your insurer the car is kept at school in New York and ask whether that changes anything on the policy. Our page on car insurance for college students in New York covers discounts and other student questions.
Flood-Prone Streets and Storm Damage
The same county plan, prepared in 2021, says flooding in Harrison hits low-lying areas and areas along its waterways. It names properties on streets including Temple Street, Congress Street, Ellsworth Avenue, Crotona Avenue, Glendale Road, Osborne Road, Park Avenue, West Street, and Condit Street. The plan’s flood insurance table, sourced to FEMA as of July 2021, shows 94 repetitive loss properties in the town and village.
Recent storms show what that means for drivers. Tropical Storm Isaias on August 4, 2020, brought gusts of 60 to 80 mph, and downed trees, wires, and flooding made some Harrison roads impassable. The plan records major flooding that made roads impassable again after Hurricane Henri on August 21, 2021, and after the remnants of Ida on September 1, 2021.
Water or wind damage to your own car is a comprehensive claim. DFS lists flood, windstorm, fire, theft, vandalism, and glass breakage among the losses comprehensive covers. Collision covers impact with another car or an object regardless of fault. New York requires neither one, but a lender or leasing company usually does. NYMI’s explainer on full coverage in New York shows how the pieces combine.
Quick tip: Adding comprehensive or collision comes with one more step. When a policy includes physical damage coverage, New York requires the insurer to inspect and photograph the car, although DFS says a brand-new car is usually excused. If the inspection isn’t completed, that coverage is suspended until it is. There’s no charge, so arrange it as soon as the new coverage is added.
How Harrison Premiums Are Set
Car insurance prices in Harrison aren’t a single number. According to DFS, every insurer divides the state into rating territories of its own, drawn from its claim costs, so the same address can land in a pricier territory with one company than with another. Your record, the drivers in the household, the coverage you choose, and the car do the rest.
For the two physical damage coverages, the vehicle is a big factor. DFS says insurers weigh each model’s price, repair bills, theft history, and damageability, and it posts a vehicle rating symbol table where higher symbols mean higher premiums. A DMV-approved PIRP defensive driving course cuts liability and collision premiums by 10% in each of the next three years, and taking it again every 36 months keeps the discount.
Before renewing, pull out your declarations page and go through the DFS automobile insurance coverage checklist. DFS suggests entering what’s on the policy and taking the checklist to your insurance representative to fix incorrect information, confirm you’re getting the discounts you’re entitled to, and get any surcharges explained. Its discount list includes an accident prevention course, anti-theft devices, anti-lock brakes, and multi-car policies.
Shopping around only means something if every quote uses matching coverage, so settle your liability, SUM, and deductible choices first. The DFS complaint ranking compares insurers by upheld complaints against the premiums each writes in New York over two years; it includes only complaints sent to DFS, so a small company can move sharply on one or two. NYMI’s New York reviews cover Allstate, Erie, GEICO, Nationwide, NYCM, Progressive, State Farm, Travelers, and USAA.
Insurance Agencies in Harrison
These offices were confirmed in September 2026 on the agency’s own website or in an insurer’s agent directory. The Sells column shows “Multiple insurers” only where one of those sources describes the office as independent; otherwise it names the insurer whose directory lists the office. NYMI hasn’t rated any of them.

Allstate lists English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Serbian at Robert Pietronuto’s office. For more towns, see our New York car insurance guides by city. If you drive into Connecticut regularly, ask each office for a quote with SUM set equal to your bodily injury limits so you can see what the extra protection costs.
The Nearest DMV and Staying Insured
White Plains borders Harrison on the west, and its DMV office at 1 Maple Ave (ZIP 10605) handles vehicle registrations and plates, out-of-state license exchanges, and license restorations. Book ahead. The DMV strongly encourages a reservation and admits only reservation holders when waits get long. The office locator lists other offices.
Your insurer issues New York State Insurance ID Cards, on paper or electronically, and the DMV needs one to register the car. Don’t sit on it: the card is good for registration for 180 days from its effective date.
Cancellations and Gaps in Coverage
During a new policy’s first 60 days, an insurer can cancel it for any reason not contrary to the Insurance Law. After that, the DFS auto insurance FAQ limits mid-term cancellation to nonpayment of premium, fraud or material misrepresentation, or the suspension or revocation of the license of the policyholder or another regular driver of the car (administrative suspensions don’t count). Nonrenewal works differently. The insurer has to mail you notice at least 45 days, and no more than 60 days, ahead of the expiration date.
Don’t let the policy lapse while you look for a new one. A gap in liability coverage can cost you your registration and your license. The DMV prices short gaps by the day: $8 for each of the first 30 days, $10 for days 31 through 60, and $12 for days 61 through 90. Beyond 90 days, paying isn’t an option. You must surrender your plates and registration, and your license stays suspended for as many days as you went uninsured. The DMV’s lapse rules have the rest. If you’re moving away or taking a car off the road, surrender the plates before canceling; the NYMI walkthrough on how to cancel a New York car insurance policy covers each step.
