New Rochelle Auto Insurance

Last Updated on September 29, 2026 by James Shaffer

Insuring a car registered in New Rochelle takes a New York policy with at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident in injury liability, $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for deaths, $10,000 in property damage liability, $50,000 in no-fault benefits, and $25,000/$50,000 in uninsured motorist coverage. The insurer must be licensed in New York, because the DMV won’t accept an out-of-state policy.

What sets New Rochelle apart is the highway that runs through it. The Thruway Authority reported 806 crashes and 229 injuries from 2018 through 2020 on a 4.8-mile stretch of I-95 that includes the city, and the same road leads to Connecticut, where basic uninsured motorist coverage doesn’t apply. This page explains how to weigh liability limits and SUM, the no-fault deadlines, DMV offices for registration, and New Rochelle agencies checked in September 2026.

At a Glance

  • Required Coverage: Injury liability of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident, higher limits for deaths, $10,000 for property damage, $50,000 in no-fault benefits, and $25,000/$50,000 uninsured motorist coverage. None of it pays for your own car.
  • I-95 Crashes: The Thruway Authority counted 806 crashes and 229 injuries from 2018 through 2020 on a 4.8-mile stretch through New Rochelle and neighboring communities. That’s a reason to price liability limits above the minimum.
  • Connecticut Trips: The New England Thruway section of I-95 runs 15 miles from the Bronx to the Connecticut line. Basic uninsured motorist coverage applies only in New York, while optional SUM also covers accidents in other states.
  • No-Fault Clock: DFS gives you 30 days after the accident to send your insurer written notice of a no-fault claim. For medical bills the limit is 45 days, and for lost wages it’s 90.

What a New Rochelle Policy Must Include

The DMV requires coverage from an insurer licensed in New York, in the same name that appears on the registration, for as long as the car is registered, whether or not it’s driven. The DMV’s insurance requirements page lists the amounts below.

CoverageRequired Amount
Liability for bodily injury$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
Liability for death$50,000 per person / $100,000 for two or more people
Liability for property damage$10,000 per crash
No-fault (personal injury protection)$50,000 per person
Uninsured motorist$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident

The first three rows pay for people and property you harm, and the last two respond to injuries to you. Our guide to types of car insurance describes each coverage, and our overview of New York insurance laws and requirements covers the statewide rules in full.

Crashes on I-95 and Liability Limits

The New England Thruway, the 15-mile section of I-95 between the Bronx and the Connecticut line, carries a lot of traffic through New Rochelle. In its 2023 federal grant application to rehabilitate a 4.8-mile stretch of the road, the Thruway Authority put average daily traffic at about 121,000 vehicles, 13% of them trucks. It reports 806 crashes and 229 injuries from 2018 through 2020, an accident rate of 137.48 per million vehicle miles that it says is 32% above the 103.79 rate for the Thruway system statewide.

The stretch also runs through neighboring communities, so those counts describe the road rather than the city. Census Bureau QuickFacts lists a mean travel time to work of 32.5 minutes for New Rochelle workers in 2020 to 2024, a figure that includes every way of commuting.

Liability limits matter most after a serious crash. An injury claim can pass $25,000 per person, and $10,000 in property damage coverage may not replace a newer car. If a claim goes over your limits, you may owe the difference. Higher limits cost more, by an amount that depends on the insurer and on you.

SUM and Trips into Connecticut

The uninsured motorist coverage on every New York policy applies only to accidents in New York. According to DFS, supplementary uninsured/underinsured motorist (SUM) coverage also applies to accidents out of state, which the basic coverage does not, and it responds when the driver who hurt you has some insurance but not enough.

Two rules shape how much SUM is worth. It can’t exceed your own bodily injury liability limits, and what you collect from the at-fault driver’s insurer is subtracted from what SUM pays. To carry more SUM, raise liability first. The DFS optional coverage guide also describes Additional PIP, which lifts the no-fault total to $100,000 or more, and Optional Basic Economic Loss (OBEL) coverage, which adds $25,000 once the basic $50,000 is used.

No-Fault Deadlines and the Serious Injury Rule

The no-fault benefit is up to $50,000 per person, whoever caused the crash. Medical bills are paid under state fee schedules. Lost earnings are replaced at 80% up to $2,000 a month for as long as three years, and other reasonable and necessary expenses are paid at up to $25 a day for a year. There is also a $2,000 death benefit outside the $50,000.

The first clock starts at the accident: your insurer needs written notice within 30 days. Separate windows of 45 days for medical bills and 90 days for lost-wage claims follow, and the DFS no-fault FAQ says a late submission needs a clear and reasonable justification. The FAQ also notes that you may bring a lawsuit against the at-fault driver if your injury meets the “serious injury” definition in Section 5102(d) of the New York Insurance Law.

Quick tip: Send the written no-fault notice within days of a crash and keep a copy, even if you don’t yet know how serious the injuries are. The 30-day period runs from the accident, not from your first doctor visit.

Flooding on the Hutchinson River Parkway

The Governor’s flooding update for September 29, 2023 quotes NYSDOT’s highway closures as of 3:45 p.m. that Friday. Two of them were in New Rochelle: the Hutchinson River Parkway at Exit 9A/B, and the parkway between Exit 8 at the Cross County Parkway and the Bronx-Westchester line.

Damage to your own car from flooding is a comprehensive claim, since DFS lists flood among the causes comprehensive covers. Collision doesn’t apply, and neither do liability or no-fault. New York doesn’t require comprehensive or collision, though a lender or leasing company may on a financed car.

What Shapes Premiums in New Rochelle

Each insurer files its own rating territories in New York, DFS explains, to reflect its claim costs, so identical drivers in New Rochelle can get different quotes from different companies. For collision and comprehensive, the model of car counts too. DFS says premiums reflect price, repair cost, theft record, and damageability, and its vehicle rating symbol table shows where a specific car falls. Higher symbols mean higher premiums.

A course under the DMV’s Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) cuts liability and collision premiums by 10% for three years. Repeat the course every 36 months and the reduction continues. If you already have tickets, our article on how speeding tickets affect car insurance explains what they can do to a premium.

Choosing Between Insurers

Prices only line up when each quote carries the same liability, SUM, and deductible choices. To gauge service, see where each company sits in the DFS complaint ranking, which compares the complaints DFS upheld with each insurer’s New York premiums over two years. It excludes complaints that never reached DFS, and a small insurer’s rank can jump on one or two cases. Search under the exact company name on the quote, since one group can appear as several separate companies.

New Rochelle Insurance Agents

Independent agencies can quote several insurers at once, while State Farm and Allstate agents sell those companies’ policies. In September 2026 we compared each address and phone number below with the agency’s website or an insurer’s agent listing, and the first-column link goes to whichever we used. NYMI hasn’t rated these offices.

DMV Offices Near New Rochelle

New Rochelle has no DMV office of its own that we could find, so registrations go through a neighboring one: White Plains at 1 Maple Avenue, Yonkers at 1 Larkin Plaza, or the Bronx District Office at 610 Exterior Street, Suite B3-02. Each of the three offers vehicle registration and plates. To look for others by city or ZIP code, use the DMV’s office locator, which says the DMV strongly encourages reservations and admits only reservation holders when waits are long.

Bring the New York State Insurance ID Card your insurer issues, and register within 180 days of the date the card takes effect. If you’re moving to Connecticut, surrender your New York plates and registration before you cancel the New York liability insurance, according to the DMV’s insurance page.
