Lynbrook Auto Insurance
Last Updated on September 29, 2026 by James Shaffer
Any car registered in Lynbrook has to carry New York’s required coverage: bodily injury liability of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident (death claims are limited separately, to $50,000 for one person and $100,000 for two or more), $10,000 in property damage liability, $50,000 in no-fault benefits, and $25,000/$50,000 in uninsured motorist coverage. The company behind the policy needs a New York license.
Three local details shape the choices beyond that minimum. Nassau County’s hazard plan for the village points to wind and winter weather rather than flooding. Tickets from the village’s own police department go through the Lynbrook Village Court. And ten insurance offices in the village are listed below, with details checked in September 2026.
At a Glance
- Wind and winter weather: The county’s hazard plan lists wind and severe winter weather as hazards affecting Lynbrook and reports no noticeable flood impact over the past five years. Comprehensive pays for windstorm damage, and collision pays when your car hits something.
- After a ticket: Finishing a DMV-approved PIRP course earns 10% off liability and collision premiums for three years. Hand the certificate to your insurer or agent within 90 days and the discount is back-dated to the day you completed the course.
- After a crash: For a New York-registered car, the DMV says the three-digit insurance company code on the accident report is the quickest route to the other driver’s insurer. Written notice of a no-fault claim is due within 30 days.
- The legal floor: Liability of 25/50/10, plus $50,000 in no-fault and uninsured motorist coverage at $25,000/$50,000. Out-of-state policies don’t satisfy the DMV.
Minimum Insurance for Cars Registered in Lynbrook
These limits apply in every New York county, and none of them pays for damage to your own car.
| Coverage | Minimum | Pays For |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability | $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident | Injuries to other people that you cause |
| Liability for death | $50,000 per person / $100,000 for two or more people | Deaths you cause |
| Property damage liability | $10,000 per crash | Other people’s property that you damage |
| No-fault (PIP) | $50,000 per person | Your medical bills, lost earnings, and other costs, whoever was at fault |
| Uninsured motorist (UM) | $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident | Your injuries when an uninsured driver causes the crash |

What Lynbrook’s Hazard Record Means for Your Car
Nassau County’s multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan includes an annex for the Village of Lynbrook. Its hazard table lists severe winter weather and wind as hazards with an impact on the community, and lightning as an infrastructure hazard. Flooding is listed as no impact, which the annex defines as no noticeable impact from the hazard over the past five years.
The annex still treats FEMA-mapped special flood hazard areas as flood-prone, and it adds that a couple of other areas in the village flood because of inadequate street drainage. No noticeable impact isn’t the same as no risk, and DFS lists flood among the losses comprehensive pays for.
That record points toward two optional coverages. Comprehensive pays for windstorm damage, and collision pays when your car hits another car or an object, regardless of fault, or overturns, according to DFS’s page on optional auto coverage. The table sorts a few common losses.
| What Happened | Coverage That Responds |
|---|---|
| Wind damages your parked car | Comprehensive (windstorm) |
| You slide on ice into a pole, a curb, or another car | Collision, regardless of fault |
| Your car overturns | Collision, which DFS says includes overturning |
| Someone breaks a window or steals the car | Comprehensive (glass breakage, vandalism, theft) |
| Your car damages someone else’s property | Property damage liability, $10,000 minimum |
| You’re hurt in a crash, whoever caused it | No-fault, up to $50,000 per person |
How a specific loss is sorted depends on the wording of your policy, so ask an agent to place any loss you’re worried about. New York requires neither collision nor comprehensive, though a lender or leasing company may require both. Whichever one you add, expect the insurer to examine and photograph the car first unless it is brand new; DFS says that costs you nothing and that the coverage stays suspended until you allow it. Our page on the types of car insurance in New York explains each coverage.
Traffic Tickets, Points, and the PIRP Course
Where a Lynbrook Ticket Goes
Lynbrook has its own police department, and the village’s court page addresses tickets issued by the Lynbrook Police Department under the Vehicle and Traffic Law. The Lynbrook Village Court is at 1 Columbus Drive. The page says you may plead by mail, with certain exceptions, and lists three ways to respond: plead guilty by mail, plead not guilty by mail, or appear on the court date. It also warns that failing to respond can lead to an arrest warrant and a license suspension.
The DMV assigns points for certain violations and says points may lead to fees, higher insurance premiums, and possible license suspension. It also charges a Driver Responsibility Assessment, paid over three years, to drivers convicted of certain traffic offenses or who reach 6 or more points within 18 months. How a ticket may change your rates is the subject of our article on speeding tickets and car insurance.
Getting the Discount and the Point Reduction
The DMV’s Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) course can be taken in a classroom, online, or through other formats such as DVD or digital cable. Completing it has two separate effects, and each has its own rules:
- The premium discount is 10% off liability and collision premiums each year for three years. If your insurer or agent receives the certificate within 90 days after you finish, the reduction starts immediately and is retroactive to the completion date. You have to retake the course every 36 months to keep it.
- The point reduction is up to 4 points, and it counts only when the DMV calculates suspensions. It applies only to violations from the 18 months before you complete the course, and you can use it once in any 18-month period.
- The course does not remove the violation, the conviction, or the points from your driving record, and the DMV says it does not prevent premium increases caused by violations or crashes.
After a Crash in Lynbrook
If the other car is registered in New York, the DMV says the quickest way to identify its insurer is to search the DFS website with the three-digit insurance company code on the accident report. The DMV also handles requests for New York insurance information for the crash date. You send the police accident report (form MV-104P) or, if there isn’t one, a completed Report of Motor Vehicle Crash (MV-104). The steps are on the DMV’s page on getting insurance information after a crash.
Quick tip: Get a copy of the police accident report as soon as it is available. The insurance company code printed on it is what leads to the other driver’s insurer fastest.
Your own claim runs on a separate clock. According to the DFS no-fault FAQ, written notice has to reach your insurer within 30 days of the accident, medical bills are due within 45 days, and lost-wage claims within 90 days, and a late submission needs a clear and reasonable justification. If the other driver had no insurance or too little, the uninsured motorist coverage you’re required to carry and, if you bought it, SUM are the coverages meant for that.

DMV Offices, Address Changes, and Moving Away
The DMV offices listed for Nassau County are Garden City (400 Oak St.), Massapequa (927 Carmans Rd.), and Bethpage (4031 Hempstead Tpke.), and none is in Lynbrook. Reserve a slot first. The DMV’s office locator says that at an office with long waits, only people holding reservations get in.
If you move, the DMV requires you to change your address on your license, permit, non-driver ID, and vehicle records within 10 days. Tell your insurer as well. DFS explains in its auto insurance FAQ that insurers price by rating territory, so a new address can change the premium.
If you’re leaving New York, the DMV’s insurance page says to surrender your plates and registration before the New York liability insurance is canceled. The sequence is spelled out in our guide to canceling car insurance in New York. After any change, the DMV’s insurance status lookup shows what the DMV has on file.
