Is Foremost Auto Insurance Good for New York Drivers?

Last Updated on October 26, 2026 by James Shaffer · Reviewed for accuracy by Daniel Major, licensed insurance agent (NPN 14733759)

Foremost is one of the insurance brands New York drivers may encounter when shopping for auto coverage. The company is part of the Farmers Insurance Group of Companies and offers personal auto insurance alongside its better-known specialty products for motorcycles, RVs, mobile homes, boats, and other vehicles.

Foremost’s current auto program is broader than it was in the past, with optional coverage such as roadside service, rental reimbursement, loan/lease coverage, rideshare coverage on some policies, and a diminishing deductible. However, availability varies by state and policy, so New York drivers should confirm which options are included in an actual quote.

At a Glance

  • Part of Farmers: Foremost was founded in 1952 and became a member of the Farmers Insurance Group of Companies in 2000.
  • Available in New York: Foremost Insurance Company Grand Rapids, Michigan is currently licensed in New York and lists private passenger auto among the policy types it offers.
  • Multiple Coverage Options: Foremost advertises liability, uninsured/underinsured motorist, rental reimbursement, roadside service, loan/lease coverage, rideshare coverage on some policies, and other auto options.
  • Foremost Is Not the Same as Bristol West: Both are associated with Farmers, but they are separate insurance brands and use different underwriting companies and product structures.

About Foremost Insurance Group

Foremost Insurance Company was founded in 1952, originally focusing on insurance for mobile homes. According to Foremost’s company history, it was acquired by the Farmers Insurance Group in 2000. You can read more about Farmers in our Farmers auto insurance review.

Foremost later expanded into many other specialty insurance markets, including motorcycles, travel trailers, motor homes, boats, and recreational vehicles. Today, it also advertises personal auto insurance.

The relationship between Foremost and Bristol West can be confusing. Farmers acquired Bristol West in 2007, and both brands are part of the Farmers organization. However, Bristol West is a separate auto insurance brand rather than simply another name for every Foremost auto policy.

Foremost’s current list of insurance companies and licenses shows Foremost Insurance Company Grand Rapids, Michigan as licensed in New York and authorized for private passenger auto insurance. Several Farmers companies associated with Foremost-branded auto products are also licensed for private passenger auto insurance in New York.

Foremost Auto Insurance Coverage

Foremost advertises the major types of coverage drivers typically consider when building an auto policy. New York policies must first satisfy the state’s mandatory insurance requirements, including auto liability insurance, No-Fault coverage, and uninsured motorist coverage.

Foremost’s current auto insurance materials list bodily injury and property damage liability as well as uninsured/underinsured motorist protection. Optional physical damage coverage can include collision coverage and comprehensive coverage, depending on the policy.

Collision coverage generally helps pay for covered damage to your own vehicle resulting from a collision, subject to your deductible and policy terms. Comprehensive coverage generally addresses covered losses from causes other than a collision, such as theft, vandalism, falling objects, or certain weather events.

Foremost also advertises uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. New York requires basic uninsured motorist bodily injury protection, while broader Supplementary Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage may be available subject to New York rules and the limits selected.

How New York No-Fault Insurance Works

New York is a no-fault insurance state, but that does not mean an at-fault driver is automatically free from bodily injury liability.

New York’s basic No-Fault, or Personal Injury Protection, coverage generally pays up to $50,000 per person for qualifying economic losses such as medical expenses and lost earnings after an accident, regardless of who caused the crash. New York also requires liability insurance that can apply when an insured is legally responsible for injuries or property damage.

The state’s minimum bodily injury liability limits are $25,000 for injury to one person and $50,000 for injury to two or more people in one accident, with higher minimum limits when an accident results in death. New York also requires at least $10,000 of property damage liability coverage.

No-Fault limits when someone can sue for non-economic losses such as pain and suffering, but a lawsuit may still be possible when the injured person meets New York’s statutory serious-injury threshold. Learn more about bodily injury liability coverage in New York or review the New York Department of Financial Services auto insurance guidance.

Additional Foremost Auto Coverage Options

Foremost currently advertises several optional features beyond basic liability and physical damage coverage. Availability can depend on the policy form and location.

  • Rental reimbursement: Can reimburse eligible rental car expenses for a specified period after a covered loss. See how rental reimbursement coverage generally works.
  • Towing and roadside service: Can reimburse or pay covered expenses when a vehicle needs towing or roadside help, subject to policy limits. Learn more about roadside assistance coverage.
  • Loan/lease coverage: Can help cover the difference between what is owed on a financed or leased vehicle and an eligible total-loss settlement, subject to the policy’s terms and limits. This is similar to what drivers commonly call gap insurance.
  • New vehicle replacement: Foremost advertises optional replacement coverage for certain newly acquired insured vehicles, subject to eligibility, time limits, dollar limits, and a deductible.
  • Diminishing deductible: Some policy forms reduce the deductible after consecutive years without a comprehensive or collision claim, with the maximum reduction depending on the policy.

Does Foremost Offer Rideshare Insurance?

Foremost currently advertises optional rideshare coverage on some auto policies for drivers who use their vehicles with services such as Uber or Lyft. However, Foremost also states that not every product or coverage is available in every location.

New York has specific insurance rules for transportation network company drivers, so do not assume a general rideshare endorsement automatically satisfies every requirement. Review our guide to New York rideshare insurance requirements and confirm with Foremost or your agent exactly when the coverage applies.

If you drive commercially for Uber or Lyft, you may also want to compare other insurance options for Uber and Lyft drivers in New York.

Is Foremost Insurance for High-Risk Drivers?

The older description of Foremost as primarily an insurer for high-risk drivers needs some clarification. Foremost itself now advertises personal auto coverage for individuals and families and does not describe its entire auto program as high-risk insurance.

Bristol West, another Farmers-affiliated brand, more explicitly markets coverage to drivers with less-than-perfect records, traffic violations, gaps in prior insurance, and certain other underwriting challenges. Bristol West also advertises the ability to provide an SR-22 or similar certificate when required.

However, Foremost and Bristol West should not be treated as interchangeable. Foremost’s current legal company listing does not show the principal Bristol West private passenger auto insurers as licensed in New York, while Foremost Insurance Company Grand Rapids, Michigan is listed as licensed in New York for private passenger auto. A New York driver who needs coverage after accidents, violations, a lapse, or another underwriting issue should verify which Farmers-affiliated company is actually offering the policy before relying on a brand-level description.

Quick tip: When comparing a Foremost quote, check the declarations page for the full legal name of the underwriting insurance company. The Foremost, Farmers, and Bristol West brands can involve different insurers, and each insurer is financially responsible for its own policies.

Foremost Auto Insurance Discounts

Foremost’s current auto insurance page lists several discounts, although availability varies by state and policy.

  • Multi-car discount: Customers who insure multiple vehicles may qualify.
  • Multi-policy discount: Customers with another qualifying Farmers, Bristol West, or Foremost policy may be eligible for savings. Read more about bundling auto and other insurance policies.
  • Paperless discount: Foremost advertises a discount when qualifying applicants agree to receive policy and billing documents electronically.

Other common auto insurance discounts may be available depending on the specific insurer and policy, but you should not assume Foremost offers every discount nationally. When requesting a quote, ask whether there are savings for paying your policy in full, using automatic payments, maintaining prior insurance, or insuring a teen driver.

How Much Does Foremost Auto Insurance Cost?

There is no single Foremost rate that applies to New York drivers. Auto insurance pricing depends on underwriting factors permitted under New York law as well as the coverage limits, deductibles, vehicles, drivers, location, discounts, and other characteristics of the policy.

It is therefore not accurate to say that Foremost will always be cheaper for drivers with accidents or more expensive for drivers with clean records. The most reliable approach is to obtain quotes using the same coverage limits and deductibles from several insurers.

Foremost’s Complaint Record in New York

New York’s Department of Financial Services ranks auto insurers every year by upheld complaints per $1 million of premiums. A complaint is upheld when DFS agrees the insurer handled something wrong, such as a late no-fault payment or an improper nonrenewal. The 2025 report covers complaints closed in 2024 and ranks 128 companies. Across all of them combined, the ratio was 0.0341.

CompanyRank (of 128)Upheld ComplaintsComplaint Ratio
Foremost Signature Insurance Company7310.0363
Foremost Insurance Company Grand Rapids, Michigan9510.0851

Taken together, the two Foremost companies had 2 upheld complaints on about $39 million of yearly New York auto premiums, a combined ratio of 0.0509. That’s worse than the 0.0341 figure for the whole market. In the previous report (complaints closed in 2023), the same companies had 3 upheld complaints and a ratio of 0.0763, against 0.0275 for all insurers that year.

Those premiums add up to 0.21% of the private passenger auto premiums counted in the DFS report. That share is our own calculation from the DFS figures, not an official market share number, but it gives a rough sense of how much of the New York market Foremost insures.

DFS points out that the ranking counts only complaints filed with the department, and that one or two extra upheld complaints can move a smaller insurer a long way. Use it alongside price, coverage and claims service, and match it to the company named on your quote or declarations page.

Foremost Financial Strength

Financial strength is worth considering because it reflects an insurer’s ability to meet its ongoing insurance obligations. Foremost currently states on its official company information page that it has an A (Excellent) financial strength rating from AM Best.

An AM Best rating is not a rating of customer satisfaction, pricing, or whether a particular claim will be paid. It is an assessment of financial strength. See our explanation of car insurance company financial stability for more information.

Foremost Customer Service and Claims

Foremost now provides more digital service options than the older version of this article described. The company has online policy management, electronic payments, digital policy documents, text alerts, and a Foremost mobile app.

Customers can also use Foremost’s website to access policy information, pay bills, and contact their insurance representative. Foremost provides an online quote starting point and an agent locator, although the exact quoting method available depends on the state and insurance product.

Foremost says claims can be reported by phone 24 hours a day or through its online claims system. Customers can also check an existing claim online. If you are involved in a crash, review our guide on how to file an auto insurance claim after an accident.

Complaint statistics should be evaluated at the specific underwriting-company level rather than assuming every policy sold under the Foremost brand has the same complaint history. The legal insurer named on your declarations page is the company responsible for the policy.

Advantages of Foremost Auto Insurance

  • Broad insurance lineup: Foremost offers auto insurance alongside home, mobile home, RV, motorcycle, boat, and other specialty products, which may make consolidating policies more convenient.
  • Optional auto features: Foremost advertises roadside assistance, rental reimbursement, loan/lease coverage, new vehicle replacement, diminishing deductibles, and rideshare coverage on some policies.
  • Multi-policy opportunities: Qualifying customers may receive discounts when they have another policy through Farmers, Bristol West, or Foremost.
  • Digital account tools: Customers can access online policy services and a mobile app rather than relying exclusively on an insurance agent.
  • Established financial strength: Foremost reports an A (Excellent) rating from AM Best.

Foremost’s range of specialty products may be especially useful for households that need insurance beyond a standard car and home policy. Consumers who have struggled to obtain voluntary-market coverage can also compare Foremost with other options before assuming they will be denied car insurance because of their driving record.

Potential Drawbacks to Consider

Foremost may not offer every advertised coverage or discount on every New York policy. The company repeatedly notes that product availability, exclusions, limits, and conditions vary by location and policy form.

The relationship among Foremost, Farmers, and Bristol West can also make comparison shopping less straightforward. Make sure you know which insurance company is underwriting the quote and compare that policy’s limits, deductibles, exclusions, discounts, and optional coverages rather than relying only on the brand name.

Finally, no single insurer is the best fit for every driver. Foremost should be compared with several auto insurance companies using equivalent coverage before choosing a policy.

How to Decide Whether Foremost Fits Your Needs

If you are considering Foremost in New York, obtain a written quote and review the legal underwriting company, liability limits, No-Fault coverage, uninsured motorist protection, deductibles, optional physical damage coverage, exclusions, discounts, and total premium.

Pay particular attention to optional coverage that matters to you. For example, confirm rideshare eligibility before driving for a transportation network company, verify loan/lease coverage limits if you finance a vehicle, and check the towing and rental reimbursement limits rather than assuming they provide unlimited benefits.

Comparing several quotes with identical coverage limits is the most useful way to determine whether a Foremost policy is competitive for your particular driving history and insurance needs.
