Is Farmers Auto Insurance Good for New York Drivers?
Last Updated on October 4, 2026 by James Shaffer
Farmers offers car insurance to New York drivers, with standard liability and physical-damage coverage plus a range of optional features and discounts that can vary by policy and state. If you are comparing Farmers with other auto insurance companies in New York, the most important questions are whether the available coverage fits your needs, which discounts you actually qualify for, and how the quote compares with other insurers for the same limits and deductibles.
Farmers maintains a dedicated New York car insurance page. Two details in particular are worth knowing before you shop: Farmers states that its Signal telematics program is not available in New York, and its accident forgiveness coverage is also not available in New York.

What Types of Car Insurance Does Farmers Offer?
Farmers offers the core coverage types New York drivers would expect from a major insurer, but the exact options and endorsements available on a particular policy can vary. New York’s required coverages are set by state law, not by Farmers.
Required New York Coverage
New York requires auto liability insurance that meets the state’s minimum insurance requirements. For a standard private passenger vehicle, the minimum liability limits include $25,000 for bodily injury to one person, $50,000 for bodily injury to two or more people, and $10,000 for property damage in one accident. New York also has higher bodily injury liability limits when an accident results in death. See the New York Department of Financial Services auto insurance guide for the current requirements.
A New York policy must also include $50,000 of basic personal injury protection (PIP), also called no-fault coverage, plus mandatory uninsured motorist bodily injury protection at the state’s minimum bodily injury limits. PIP can cover eligible medical expenses, a portion of lost earnings, and certain other necessary expenses regardless of fault. Mandatory uninsured motorist coverage protects against bodily injury caused by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver in New York.
For a deeper look at the liability side of a policy, see our guide to bodily injury liability coverage in New York and our explanation of uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. New York also allows drivers to buy Supplementary Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (SUM) coverage above the basic mandatory uninsured motorist protection, subject to state rules and the bodily injury limits selected.
Collision, Comprehensive, and Other Optional Coverage
Drivers can generally add collision coverage for covered crash damage to their own vehicle and comprehensive coverage for covered non-collision losses such as theft, weather damage, or vandalism. If you finance or lease a vehicle, your lender or lessor may require both even though New York law does not.
Farmers also advertises optional auto features nationally such as rental reimbursement, towing or roadside assistance, customized equipment coverage, glass coverage, and other add-ons. Availability depends on the state, policy form, vehicle, and underwriting. Before adding anything, review the cost and what the endorsement actually covers. Our guides to additional coverage options, towing coverage, and rental reimbursement explain the tradeoffs.
New York drivers can also consider optional Additional PIP, OBEL, SUM, and in some cases medical payments coverage. Because New York already provides basic no-fault benefits, medical payments coverage should be evaluated in the context of your existing PIP and health coverage. PIP can also help with eligible rehabilitation expenses and lost earnings, subject to policy and statutory limits.
Rideshare, New Car Replacement, and Accident Forgiveness
Farmers advertises rideshare coverage and vehicle-replacement features in some states, but these options are not automatically available with every Farmers policy. New York has special insurance requirements for app-based transportation, so drivers for Uber, Lyft, or similar services should compare their personal policy, the platform’s coverage, and New York’s rideshare insurance requirements before relying on a personal auto policy.
Farmers also describes new car replacement and vehicle replacement coverage as state-dependent. If this feature matters to you, ask whether it is offered on the exact New York policy you are being quoted and compare it with our guide to new car replacement coverage.
Quick tip: Farmers specifically states that accident forgiveness is not available in New York. Do not assume a nationally advertised Farmers feature is included in a New York quote; confirm the endorsement on the quote or policy before buying.
If accident forgiveness is important to you, see our separate guide on whether accident forgiveness is worth buying and compare insurers that currently make the feature available in New York.
What Discounts Does Farmers Offer in New York?
Farmers’ New York page currently highlights multi-vehicle, youthful-driver, and multi-policy discounts. Its broader national discount list also includes programs tied to payment method, driving history, students, and other characteristics, but Farmers notes that not all discounts are available in every state. That makes it important to ask which discounts are actually included in your New York quote rather than relying on a nationwide list.
Depending on eligibility and state availability, discounts worth asking about include a safe or good driver discount, a multi-vehicle discount, and an automatic payment discount. Families should also ask about discounts for young drivers, students who meet academic requirements, and a possible student-away-from-home discount. For broader guidance on insuring younger household members, see our teen driver insurance guide.
New York also has a state-approved Point and Insurance Reduction Program. An eligible principal operator who completes a DMV-approved course can qualify for a 10% reduction in the base rate of liability and collision premiums for three years. See the New York DMV’s approved PIRP course list and our guide to defensive driving courses.
Farmers Signal Is Not Available in New York
The original version of this article discussed Farmers’ Signal smartphone program as a New York discount. That is no longer accurate. Farmers’ current disclosures state that Signal and the Signal discount are not available in New York. You can still read our general explanation of telematics insurance discounts, but New York Farmers shoppers should not count on Signal when comparing quotes.
What Is Farmers’ Pricing Like in New York?
There is no single Farmers rate that meaningfully represents what every New York driver will pay. Premiums can vary based on rating territory, vehicle, annual mileage, coverage selections, deductibles, household drivers, prior insurance, and other factors permitted under New York law. Your driving record and age and driving experience can also affect pricing.
Because of that variation, it is more useful to compare Farmers with several other insurers using the same liability limits, physical-damage deductibles, optional coverages, drivers, and vehicles. A cheaper quote with lower limits or fewer endorsements is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
Quick tip: Ask for a written quote that shows the exact limits, deductibles, endorsements, and discounts. Then use those same settings when you quote competing insurers.
Farmers’s Complaint Record in New York
New York’s Department of Financial Services ranks auto insurers every year by upheld complaints per $1 million of premiums. A complaint is upheld when DFS agrees the insurer handled something wrong, such as a late no-fault payment or an improper nonrenewal. The 2025 report covers complaints closed in 2024 and ranks 128 companies. Across all of them combined, the ratio was 0.0341.
This includes the three former MetLife auto companies that Farmers renamed after buying MetLife Auto and Home in 2021, plus Mid-Century Insurance Company. Foremost, another Farmers company, has its own review.
| Company | Rank (of 128) | Upheld Complaints | Complaint Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Farmers Casualty Insurance Company | 6 | 0 | 0.0000 |
| Mid-Century Insurance Company | 70 | 1 | 0.0316 |
| Farmers Group Property and Casualty Insurance Company | 76 | 5 | 0.0409 |
| Farmers Property and Casualty Insurance Company | 77 | 5 | 0.0429 |
Taken together, the four Farmers companies had 11 upheld complaints on about $307 million of yearly New York auto premiums, a combined ratio of 0.0358. That’s worse than the 0.0341 figure for the whole market. In the previous report (complaints closed in 2023), the same companies had 16 upheld complaints and a ratio of 0.0565, against 0.0275 for all insurers that year.
Those premiums add up to 1.7% of the private passenger auto premiums counted in the DFS report. That share is our own calculation from the DFS figures, not an official market share number, but it gives a rough sense of how much of the New York market Farmers insures.
DFS points out that the ranking counts only complaints filed with the department, and that one or two extra upheld complaints can move a smaller insurer a long way. Use it alongside price, coverage and claims service, and match it to the company named on your quote or declarations page.
Is Farmers Financially Stable?
Financial strength matters because an insurer needs enough capital and reserves to meet policyholder obligations. In a September 3, 2026 rating action, AM Best affirmed an A (Excellent) Financial Strength Rating for the members of Farmers Insurance Group. AM Best kept the Financial Strength Rating outlook stable and revised the outlook on the group’s Long-Term Issuer Credit Ratings to positive.
A financial strength rating is not a guarantee about any individual claim, nor does it tell you whether Farmers will be the lowest-priced insurer for your household. It is one factor to consider alongside coverage, price, service, and the policy terms.
What Is Farmers’ Claims and Customer Service Experience Like?
Farmers provides several digital service options. Its claims portal allows customers to file a claim online, check claim status, review documents and payments, and upload receipts or other documents. Farmers also offers a mobile app for policy documents, payments, and claims-related tasks.
For a New York driver, those tools can be useful, but service quality can vary by claim, adjuster, agency, and circumstances. Rather than relying on broad claims that Farmers is always better or worse at service, consider the support channels you prefer and how much you value access to an agent. If you are dealing with a loss now, our guide explains how to file a car insurance claim after an accident.
Reasons Farmers May Be Worth Comparing
- Farmers actively offers auto insurance in New York.
- It offers the standard coverage foundation New York drivers need, with additional optional coverages depending on the policy.
- Farmers highlights multi-vehicle, youthful-driver, and multi-policy discounts for New York.
- Online quote, policy-service, and claims tools are available.
- The Farmers group has an A (Excellent) Financial Strength Rating from AM Best as of September 2026.
What to Check Before Buying a Farmers Policy
- Compare equivalent quotes. Use the same limits, deductibles, drivers, and optional coverages across insurers.
- Confirm New York availability. Optional Farmers features advertised nationally may not be offered in New York.
- Do not count on Signal. Farmers says its Signal telematics program is not available in New York.
- Do not count on accident forgiveness. Farmers says accident forgiveness is not available in New York.
- Review the declarations and endorsements. The policy documents—not a general marketing page—control what your specific policy covers.
How to Decide Whether Farmers Fits Your Needs
Farmers is a legitimate option for New York drivers, but the best way to evaluate it is to compare a real Farmers quote with competing quotes for the same coverage. Focus on the liability limits you want, whether you need comprehensive and collision, your preferred deductibles, optional protections, and the discounts actually applied to the quote.
If Farmers gives you a competitive price for the coverage you want and you value its agent and digital service options, it may deserve a place on your shortlist. If another insurer offers materially better terms or a feature Farmers does not offer in New York, such as accident forgiveness, that difference may matter more than the brand name alone.
